In a decisive move, Bishop Enos Kitto Kagodo of Mukono Diocese has issued a ban on promenade dances and parties in church schools, citing troubling reports of misconduct and indiscipline associated with such events. The bishop expressed alarm over the prevalence of “coupling” and drug abuse during prom parties, with some students reportedly using drugs to overcome shyness on the day of the event.
Promenade, commonly known as prom, is a traditional dance party for high school students, typically held towards the end of the academic year. However, Bishop Kagodo raised concerns about the growing trend of inappropriate behavior and disciplinary infractions at these gatherings.
Addressing headteachers from church-owned schools in four districts, including Mukono, Buikwe, Buvuma, and Kayunga, Bishop Kagodo highlighted the contradiction between the values promoted by schools and the lax enforcement of rules during promenade parties. He emphasized the need for stricter oversight to prevent misconduct and safeguard students’ well-being.
The bishop’s decision comes amid mounting concerns about the adverse effects of promenade parties on students’ academic performance and moral development. With a total of 270 church-owned schools under Mukono Diocese, the ban aims to address these concerns and promote a culture of discipline and responsibility among students.
Susan Wamala Sserunkuuma, chairperson of the Mukono diocesan headteachers’ association, echoed Bishop Kagodo’s sentiments, acknowledging the challenges posed by promenade parties. She emphasized the importance of parental and teacher involvement in guiding students towards responsible behavior.
Recent incidents, including extravagant displays of wealth and luxury at prom events, have sparked public outcry and prompted calls for greater oversight and accountability. Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, the State Minister for Higher Education, condemned such displays, stressing the need for moderation and restraint.
In light of these developments, Bishop Kagodo’s ban on promenade parties underscores the importance of promoting a culture of discipline and accountability in school environments. By prioritizing students’ well-being and academic success, the bishop aims to create a conducive learning environment free from distractions and harmful influences.
