Jocelyn Uchanda, a leading figure in Ugandan netball and a candidate for the Uganda Netball Federation presidency, has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Real Stars Sports Agency. The award ceremony took place on September 3, 2024, at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo, recognizing Uchanda’s outstanding contributions to the sport.
Uchanda, who has long served as the manager of NIC Netball Club and the Uganda national netball team (She Cranes), has been instrumental in the development of netball in Uganda. Upon receiving the award, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition. My journey in sports management has been fueled by passion, and this award makes me feel truly special.”
She also took the opportunity to congratulate other award winners from different sports disciplines and emphasized the importance of dedication and love for the game. “In sports, whether it’s netball, football, boxing, or basketball, we are all part of one big family. Success comes from loving what you do, and I encourage everyone to keep that passion alive.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award, previously given to Mukwenda Godfrey Mbalire in July for his contributions to the Masaza Cup, now adds Uchanda to its distinguished list of recipients, highlighting her significant impact on Ugandan sports.
The event also celebrated top athletes from various sports. Julius Ssenyonga, the talented goalkeeper from Ssaza Ssingo, was named the best footballer of August. Ssenyonga’s stellar performance, which included three clean sheets in the 2024 Masaza Cup, earned him this accolade. At just 19 years old, Ssenyonga has already made a name for himself, having previously won awards in the Buganda Regional League with Ntugasazi FC and Kiyinda Boys.
In the basketball category, Lydia Babirye, a scholar-athlete currently studying in the USA, was awarded the best basketball player of August. Babirye’s MVP-worthy performance in the Basketball 3×3 World Cup qualifier helped Uganda secure a spot in the upcoming tournament in Mongolia. She was selected over strong contenders like Joel Lukoji of KIU Rangers and Shakira Navubya of UCU Canons.
In boxing, John Sserunjoji was recognized as the best boxer of August, marking his second ForteBet Real Stars Sports Monthly Award. Sserunjoji’s knockout victory over Egypt’s Ahmed Boloshy in the 8th round showcased his prowess in the middleweight division.
The awards were presented by Buikwe South aspiring Member of Parliament Isaac Mukasa, along with representatives from Jude Colour Solutions and ForteBet, to all the winners who also received cash prizes.
This event not only highlighted the exceptional talents of Uganda’s top athletes but also honored the enduring contributions of leaders like Jocelyn Uchanda, who continue to inspire and shape the future of sports in the country.
