Mexico Flood Disaster: Over 60 Dead and Thousands Homeless After Days of Torrential Rain
Mexico is grappling with one of its deadliest floods in recent years as torrential rains submerged entire towns across the central and Gulf regions. At least 66 people have died and 75 others are missing, according to government figures, while tens of thousands have been forced from their homes.
Triggered by a tropical depression and amplified by two tropical systems, the floods have exposed the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather. The government deployed 10,000 soldiers to assist rescue operations, but survivors accuse officials of reacting too slowly.
President Claudia Sheinbaum estimated that around 100,000 homes were damaged, describing the figure as preliminary pending a full assessment. Experts say the flooding highlights the growing climate crisis facing Latin America, where heavy rainfall events have become increasingly frequent and destructive.
